Mumbai life is so fast

Mumbai Life I have heard many people saying that Mumbai life is too fast. I really don’t understand what they mean by that. The office timings in Mumbai are the same like in other cities. The amount of work is also the same. Then why the fast tag with Mumbai life. The only difference which I can see in Mumbai is the traffic jam and narrow lanes.

It’s been 8 months in Mumbai. If I compare my life in Delhi and in Mumbai, here I have to take an auto rickshaw from my home to Railway Station, then Local train, again auto rickshaw to my office. It’s not only my story, in my office, many people takes bus, then local train and either walk or takes auto rickshaw to reach office. It’s very rare to reach a venue by using only one source. Does that makes Mumbai faster then other city, since people has to travel a lot.

The other thing which I have noticed is the speed of Pedestrians. Here they walk too fast, unlike Delhi or any other city. I think that is also because to reach the place on time, not because they are very active.

If I generalize, it’s actually the crowd, the traffic and narrow roads of the city which makes the city labeled as the Fast Life.

I am not the better person to comment, let me hear from real Mumbiakars. What they think about that. Why they say “Mumbai life is so fast”

P.S. The post is not to offense any Mumbaikar. I love the city and the people here.

Sounds like comparing New York to the US South. NYC is a fast-paced city as people want to get everything done asap. in the south they are more relaxed and friendly. the only thing i miss [because i moved out to the west coast] is the food. yum. :-d

Well Nidhi , i persoanlly feel two things about fast life of Mumbai

i) I have heard/found that if u want to enquire about some place or something in Mumbai . No mumbaikar will help u. They will even not bother to listen u. They will be more engrossed with their thoughts in their worlds.

ii) Mumbikars will not be aware of big events that happen in their neigbours.I have found that in mumbai people don’t get to know about a marriage that happens in a house beside his/her house or which is in same lane.

Nidhi ,This is just my personal opinion about fast life of mumbai.i don’t want to offence to Mumbai or Mumbai people.

Dilip, I disagree with both of the points you have written [also the fact they don't addup to fast nature of life in Mumbai].

Mumbaikar always helps you, even if you stop a person on the road they will tell you directions. Yes, you can enounter someone who won’t tell you, but then you find jackasses in every city. An average Mumbai resident will always help you [have always happened with me].

As for neighbours, it is more whether we want to keep in touch ! Many people come with notion that neighbours don’t minghle here, which is completely untrue. Unless you have a bachelor as your neighbour [I am is a good example of this, during my bachelor days, I didn't had the time or the inclenation to find about my neighbours coz I used to come home only to sleep].

The reason Mumbai’s life is called fast is because of the distances and the time it takes to cover them. My workplace is 45 minutes drive [on bike] from my home one-way. If I travel by bus/train the journey-time will only increase and I cannot move to a place near my office since my budget does not approve of it [same as many people]. Now when I am spending 8-9 hours in office + 1.3 Hours travelling, how much time does it leave me for myself ?

And it is just me, where I consider myself lucky that I have to travel just 45 minutes. I know about people who spend more than an hour on-way travelling.

It is because of this time constraint, everyone is in a hurry [sort of] to reach home/office. Hence the life in Mumbai looks fast.

oh! its a new template…

hi there,

i guess,,what makes mumbai seem more faster is :
a.> that this city gives …,,to all its people,,, more oppurtunities to succeed faster,,if you got the talent,,..!

so IF one has got the urge to succeed or in other words if one has the urge to do well for himself….than this city will give him all the chances to do so at a faster rate…!

b.> the city actually keeps you on the toe most of the time….catch a bus, local, bus, walk, work…!

though cannot be called a mumbaikar myself….but have a uncle out there…..and also due to the proximity of the city to where i live..so stay there many times..love this city..!

actually after a few days in mumbai,,i feel i live in a hill station….where there is no such high pressure while travelling..!

nice post..!

ANKIT,.

Hi Neeraj ,
may be unfortunatly my friends and I got bad experience with Mumbaikar and their behaviours. I told two points about Mumbai what i and my friends experienced. There is noting manipulated i wrote. may be i and my friends were unlucky those days that we experienced something bad about Mumbai and local people of mumbai. And we concluded that may be they are behaving like this coz of fast life of mumbai.

I agree with u that ” time constraint” is one of the biggest things which maintains fast life in Mumbai. i agree with u that in Mumbai one has to drive or catch many buses/trains for reaching their offices/homes.

I wish my friends and I could not have negative/bad experience with local people of mumbai those days.

And i m sorry , if i offended anyone here. but i really have bad experince with mumbai.

I don’t see anything negative about the fast paced lifestyle in metropolitan cities. I don’t think there is any other way. Multi-tasking, and shortage of time to fulfill tasks create the illusion of time flying back. That’s not isolated to cities either. If a person is really involved in anything, life seems fast paced.

I must say though, a fast lifestyle makes life pretty impersonal. You walk by things without looking at them a second time. People don’t stop to enjoy life..

couldn’t hav agreed more with nidhi, mentioning the fact the roads are narrow is absolutely bang on ,always wanted to say this.not knowing about your locality or your surrounding is not to be felt proud about but is ignorance.also there is no such thing as city of dreams now as every city has its own speciality for instance, person intersted in info tech wouldn’t go to mumbai but banglore or delhi,simi.. wannabe actors wud go to mumbai not banglore

Hi Adi

It seems pakka mumbaikar has posted the comment. You still didn’t answer me, why the Fast Tag with the Mumbai life.

I agree, every city has some flaws n strengths. No city is a dream city. I have shared my assumption why so called “fast” tag with Mumbai life not with others.

Regarding my locality, do you think that I have only seen my locality and never gone beyond that. That is something crazy to presume.

It’s not that all the roads are packed, but most of them are. Don’t you agree me on that.

Cheers :)
Nidhi

hi nid i am not agree with dilip his calculation is totally wrong.the mumbaikars are very helpful.id u said that the roads are narrow no in all athe lanes road r ot narrow i think still u have not gone for mumbai darshan visit once and than reply me back&dilip u too.i m mumbai boy and i know how is mumbai life&and the people of mumbai

Hi Kapil

I agree with you in regard to the people here. They are very simple, helpful and kind. I have so many good frens here.

I know all the lanes are not narrow; the question was not about the lanes. It’s about the fast tag with Mumbai life. Why we always say the Mumbai Life is so fast, I think probably becoz of long distances and too much of traffic jam, ppl needs to do everything fast to reach the destination. I believe that is the reason ppl walk fast or impatiently enter into the local trains

Cheers :)
Nidhi

mumbai is a fkuced up city if u compare it to western countries.in the USA everywhere u get more oppurtunities than mumbai and even in small cities it is shining everywhere and quality if life is high.therefore mumbai sucks.it is all the hype.lowest standards of usa are considered highest in india.in usa even in a village area a maid can earn 1 lakh per month!

i’m worried ,how will i manage when i’ll be there .i’m coming to join u all in mumbai all through the roads of nepal.hope to see nad pray for mumbai to be a little slower while my earlier days there so that i may not have the difficulties in adopting with it.
see u soon mumbai.
and all u mumbaikar.

I am living in mumbai for last 3 yrs now. The life is fast in mumbai is attributable to the people of mumbai who thinks always ahead. For example, they plan the activities faster and execute it faster than any other cities. I have lived in Delhi, chennai and calcutta. I could find that people once into the job are very active till they complete. They reach their targets in time fighting agains traffic jams and narrow lanes but still the mumbaiya mind makes the life fast.

Mumbai has been my first LOVE… I would say it offers more than any other city (not to offend any other city but yes its true)…. people in other cities boast about a perticular sector the city is good in but in mumbai there is lot to offer than just that…. may it be Software, Media, FMCG, Engineering, Housing, etc… and the whole bunch of thing is at the peak so the single sector doesn’t come in lime light…..

It is called as fast lane city not because cause of the traffic or the people walking fast…. but the way people can grow in their career (provided they have talent) …. I know some one who was nothing 6 months back has a flat and a car now…..

And DILIP please dont talk about the spirit of MUMBAIKARS…. cause u were not here at the time of the blast and the floods…. you should have seen how people have helped the strangers… they have given the lives for the strangers…. and frankly i would not like MUMBAI to be compared to any other city… I often visit DELHI, HYDERABAD, BANGALORE, CHENNAI and lot of other cities…and MUMBAI is much warmer to people…. I have seen how communal the other cities are…. Just try talking in HINDI (our NATIONAL LANGUAGE) in HYDERABAD or BANGALORE or CHENNAI you feel like you have done crime…. You speak in hindi they treat you like alien… DELHI & BANGALORE are very cold and snobbish…

And Talking about Traffic Jams DELHI and BANGLORE has more JAMS though having wider roads…. yes and the auto rikshaws ans buses putting kerosene with petrol polluting the place more….

What ever sector one is all want to come to mumbai….. All at the end of the day want to settle in Mumbai because it offers so much….

WHAT EVER ANY ONE SAYS “MUMBAI IS THE BEST”

i am born and broughtup in mumbai. i feel that mumbai has become quite unsafe. as a girl i experience a lot as i use public transport. day by day the fear and the sense of unsecurity among people keeps increasing.

after every bad incident that happens in the city media and many people talk about the spirit of mumbai and say that there is nothing that can stop mumbaikars from living their lives but the truth is that mumbaikars dont have a choice but to get back to their work as they cannot afford to loose their jobs.

it is very disappointing to live a life like this where everyday when u get out of home u are scared and just hope that nothing bad happens to urself or ur luved ones.

there absolutely no peace of mind.

Mumbai people used to rush to home from work (vice versa). It seemed they do not have time for anything. At times you feel that Mumbai is a city where people are heartless and business-minded. It may be true to some extent.

Life in Mumbai came to a standstill because of heavy rains. But Mumbaikars helped each other out in every possible way. Same case when Mumbai was hit by Bomb Blasts. This could be easily called the ‘Mumbai Phenomenon’ as only a fellow Mumbaikar can understand the plight of a fellow Mumbaikar and help adequately.

Helping each other is one example for Mumbai being Fast. Mumbaikars can lead their routine life without getting disturbed by any means.

After the 12th March 1993 bomb blasts, The very next day most people went about their business as usual!

Quick Recovery….is another example for Mumbai being Fast.

Time is regarded as something very valuable in Mumbai. Mumbaikars know the value of time! They work hard. Commuting everyday to the workplace by Mumbai’s local trains is not an experience – it is an ordeal.

Hi! I am from Gujarat and planning to come to Mumbai. I don’t know so much about Mumbai except some past visits. I was doing a general search through Internet to know more about the city and life over there and I came across Nidhi’s blog (a very nice one I should say :-).

Now one thing I would like to ask you people (if anyone gets to read this topic NOW)… What about safety? (Especially women) It is the only thing that makes me step back. And that’s reasonable, since I don’t know the inner stuff about the city.

I don’t care about of fast life, I am ready for it. I’ve received very good views about Mumbaikars so I dont care about that too. Safety is the only concern.

I reviewed all of your thoughts and dropped my idea to open my camp office in Mumbai, I don’t want traffic jam etc. I have seen Mumbai in news only, crowd and crowd, damage raods, dirts, old slum type multi story buildings, slum. Mumbai is not fast as jam can slow and stop every thing. So Mumbai is not fast Mumbai is slow city. I think Mumbai is now old city like an old man with wrinkles. Mumbai looks nice only on Tv or cinema only. Now I plan to go Delhi, just like a young city. Sorry for a thaka hua shahar Mumbai my sympothy for Mumbai and Mumbaikar

Nide..Ur ? Was fast life” honey life in mumbai is not fast……Untill
